On behalf of Hawks Nest, the University of Iowa’s official student section organization, I would like to extend an personal welcome to all incoming UI freshmen currently attending orientations throughout this summer. The Class of 2016 will be a great group of Hawkeyes, as usual!
We understand this is a chaotic time for you, and your head may still be swirling with impending academic deadlines, choices of major, organizational opportunities, and a likely nagging parental voice in your ears. But Hawks Nest doesn’t want you to fret; take a deep breath and consider the multitude of benefits involvement with us can (and will) provide you.
I’m sure many of you are purchasing football and basketball season tickets, but wonder how you could become more fully engaged in the Hawkeye athletic experience, which is a special opportunity afforded to those enrolled at Iowa. Whether you choose Hawks Nest as your Pick One initiative, attend the fourth annual Hawkapalooza concert & pep rally in Hubbard Park, or simply find us draped in gold at Kinnick Stadium September 8th versus Iowa State, Hawks Nest wishes to plant the seeds to a strong, sturdy relationship with you, the UI student.
By offering chartered bus trips to away contests in football, basketball, and wrestling, insightful student meetings at delightful downtown establishments such as Brother’s, soon-to-be announced benefits specific to Hawks Nest membership, and so much more, Hawks Nest wants to enhance both your student experience in Iowa City and create the Big Ten’s best supporting atmosphere for athletic events. Our mission is to be fair & sportsmanlike, cheer with gusto, and foster a school spirit that extends beyond the playing fields or courts, unifying students, faculty, and alumni into one great mass of black & gold Hawkeye family.
In 2012, Hawks Nest will partner with Scope Productions and a host of local sponsors to provide the UI community with a uniquely spectacular pep rally & premium concert for the fourth consecutive year in Hawkapalooza (HP). With past acts such as Lupe Fiasco, Big Boi (of Outkast fame), and Mike Posner, HP has a tradition of excellence in providing quality entertainment to upwards of 10,000 rabid Hawkeyes in Hubbard Park yearly. In addition to the concert, HP also offers a daylong “Ultimate Tailgate” with games, food, and prize chances to model an enjoyable & responsible tailgating experience, as well as a pep rally featuring fall athletic teams like Fran McCaffery’s much-hyped 2012-13 basketball squad or the field hockey unit. Generally held before the first home football game, Hawks Nest & Scope are currently in the process of determining an artist & solidifying a final date, so stay tuned for updates when they arrive.
Finally, in addition to our Facebook and Twitter accounts, continue to check our new website here at HawksNest.uiowa.edu for fresh content as the fall approaches, including multimedia, weekly informational posts, and breaking news related to our organizational development. Stop by and see us whenever you can, or you can head to our tent at Hawkapalooza in September. We’d love to field your questions, discuss various ways you can become involved in our efforts, and cheer side-by-side at every Hawkeye athletic competition!
Remember, football season is only two months away! Hawks Nest looks forward to seeing you all in the fall, as it will surely be a memorable year. On Iowa & Go Hawks!
Sincerely,
Jordan Fries, Director of Marketing
